1920-1997

Zhang Jun Qiu Performs
The Story of West Chart

One of the giants in the art of Chinese Opera in this century, Zhang Jun Qiu devoted his entire professional life to perfecting the role of 'Chin Yi' (tragic heroine) and, through daring innovation in an art for steep in tradition, made it uniquely his own. Zhang's 'Chin Yi' was known to be exceptionally poised and elegant, his singing lyrical and lush; his stylized acting lovely to behold. The women recreated in his adaptation of familiar tales were individuals of character, courage, goodness and integrity. Following the footsteps of the four opera greats, Mei, Sheng, Cheng and Xun, Zhang emerged as a grand master in his own right, creating a style of acting for the female role, that marked a milestone in Chinese performing arts.
Zhang Jun Qiu and His Son Zhang Xue Hao

"My father, Zhang Jun Qiu, whom I adored with the deepest affection, was also a grand master of the art of Chinese Opera of the highest order, a consummate artist, and a courageous visionary, whom I regarded with awe and admiration. I am deeply grateful to all the participating artists at this performance in his memory, and call on all art lovers to continue their support for his legacy. Father may be gone, but the treasures he left behind will go on illuminating the world of performing arts for generations to come." - Zhang Xue Hao recorded in Commemoration Performance, May 1998, at New York.
