Murry Bergtraum High School, New York, September 12, 1999

Anhui has contributed significantly to China's arts and culture. Anhui is well known for its reputation in traditional Chinese performances and operas. The most popular opera is the Huang Mei Opera, which has a more than 200 year history. Huang Mei Opera grew out of the traditional Chinese country folk dancing, songs, and performances, centering in An Qing county, Anhui.

Given its folksy countryside flavor, Huang Mei is known to many as the opera of Chinese villagers. The easy listerning and soothing nature of the songs easily brings out the human emotions and inner feelings out of the characters in the stories. In addition to being easy to understand and pleasant to listen to, Huang Mei stories often relate to folk tales and the lives of common Chinese villagers, making it very popular among the Chinese audience.

Gaining popularity in China and receiving more interests from abroad, Huang Mei Opera has been performed in different parts of China including Hong Kang, Macao and Taiwan and other countries in Asia and Europe. Anhui Huang Mei Opera Institue is looking forward to the more enthusiasm from the audience in the United States with their fascinated performance.
