After Queens Public Televion's exclusive interview on John Wang's photography, one may not know that John Wang wears another big hat as the Producer of NYJPW Chinese Opera while Penny Wang was busy performing from stage to stage throughout the United States and China.
Any traditional art that resembles the cultural and reflects the civilization of the country, it must be a kind of art that forms beauty and spirit that can present the significant specialty. In general, Chinese opera can be represented by Beijing Opera. What we see today at Time Square, New York City hanging a big picture of the painted face of Beijing Opera is made by the Traveler Agency of China to welcome the tourists to visit China in 2008 for Olympic Games. The colorful face and custom is always in the main character when Chinese Opera is in the theme.
Penny Wang's parents love to see Chinese Opera and influenced Penny since she was a little girl in Taiwan. Penny joined the Opera Club in the College and performed over many cities in Taiwan. Fortunately Penny got Dr. Shih's graduate assistance scholarship of Asian Studies at St. John's University and came to the United States for her advance studies on 1975. Dr. Shih himself liked Chinese Opera very much and could sing some stories whenever he had a chance in front of the student's gather events.
John Wang loves to see Chinese Opera as an audience, not a stage performer. He has spent a lot of time to learn how to make an Opera show. It is not easy for John as a producer. It needs to have the professional level of understanding of the front and back stages, costumes, props, musicians, performers, make-up, dressers, rehearsals, find the proper director and location to perform, etc. Most importantly, John needs to find the source of funding to support the production. One would think the ticket sell may help to balance the cost. It is very difficult to get some money back from $10 or $50 a seat. Most of the time, John has to invite his friends or interested audience to see the show with free admissions. Since Penny likes to perform, John has put up all NYJPW's Chinese Opera shows with John and Penny's own donations. It is an expenses hobby. John does everything for Penny, his beloved wife, John has promoted Chinese arts and culture with a big accomplishment.
Penny Wang loves to perform Chinese Opera. Penny follows good professional teachers to learn how to sing, act and perform the Chinese Opera. With John's accompany, Penny spent whole Saturday to meet her teachers to learn acting and practice singing at John's Studio, 30 East 20th Street, New York City. Penny is an amateur performer and cannot be expected as perfect as professional. Penny has been concentrated to learn one story at a time and prepared to perform once she and John think the time is ready for the show. One person's practice is simple but not easy for entire show to be put up on the stage. John has to organize the multiple programs for one show which Penny is only performing for one. John has to invite all the professional artists to act in the programs and prepare all the costumes, props and scenery for stage. The theater management includes usher, Chinese and English manuscripts, edit program stories, audio and video, photography, etc. The stage management, includes props and scenery, make-up, dressers, iron costumes, direct the actors and actresses' movement, dinner and transportation arrangement, etc.
It is very complex and must know what has to be done to get the show successfully performed. To be a great producer is not an easy job and experiences can make it perfect, same as any other fields. John Wang, without any professional training, he learned from every time NYJPW Chinese Opera performance and successfully made himself become one of the greatest producers in New York.
The following article is written by Penny Wang to describe how much she loves the Chinese Opera since she was a little girl. With the whole heart of love, Penny has continuously singing and performing from Taiwan to the United States and China over years. One of the greatest performances was "The Orphan of Zhao" which Penny acted as Chen Yin started age 40 to 55 on stage at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, New York. Penny had learned the story how to act and sing over 3 years before John put up the show on the stage. It is the highest successful peek of NYJPW Chinese Opera performance. It was excited and encouraged many Chinese opera lovers and many of them started to learn Chinese Opera. One of the most famous Chinese writer Susie Chao had article written about
Penny Wang's performance and commented, "Penny Wang has successfully performed her role at home, at work and on the stage."
John and Penny Wang are appreciated everyone's patronage and continuously support. Hope through this article can help everyone to know better about John & Penny's work at NYJPW with their dedicated devotion to the communities.
John and Penny also hope everyone can join with them to promote Chinese Arts and Culture in the United States.
