Chinese Opera Performs for Retiring New York Banker
Jersey City, New Jersey, March 27, 1997


NYJPW presents its first 1997 event at a retirement party for Joseph Samaritano, Managing Director of a major New York Bank. Joe is retiring on March 31, 1997, after 36 years of service. NYJPW has the honor to entertain at the party with the following Chinese Opera program:
Farewell My Concubine intimately portrays the affection shared by a warlord, Hsiang Yu, King of Western Chu(221-203 B.C.), and his favorite courtesan, Lady Yu. The devotion of Lady Yu for her lord leads her to commit suicide after a farewell dance for King Hsiang Yu. The Beautiful Bait of the Three Kingdoms is from the famous novel, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms(189-277 A.D.). Liu Pei, the king of Su, borrowed Jing State that belongs to Kingdomship of Eastern Wu. He is not returning and the king of Eastern Wu trys set a beautiful bait to use his sister to marry Liu to catch Liu Pei. Liu Pei is protected by the Prime Minister of Eastern Wu and gets the permission from Mother Queen of Eastern Wu to complete the marriage.

Mr. Zhao Chun-Gi is the drummer. Zhao graduated from the Beijing Chinese Opera School in 1966. Zhao has been honored for his contributions to Chinese opera in China and Taiwan. Zhao has performed in Japan, England, Austria, Hong Kong and Taiwan. He came to New York in 1993. Since then he has performed more than 200 times in many U.S. cities.

Mr. Wei Guo-Yong plays the Hu Ching. Wei graduated from Tienjing Chinese Opera School in 1965. Wei has visited more then 300 major cities in China and the U.S. Wei has taught Chinese Opera in many U.S. universities, i.e. Columbia, Yale, NYU, Pace, etc. Wei has been honored for his contribution to Chinese opera in China and U.S. He came to New York in 1992 and has provided his excellent techniques in many Chinese Opera Associations in New York City and Washington, D.C.

Ms. Helen Chen sings Lady Yu. Helen came to U.S. in 1971. Helen works as Secretary for Chairman of the Board of Tinicum Company. Helen started to learn Chinese opera on 1995, and she can sing very well on the stage. Helen is an amature Chinese opera singer. Helen has performed in New York 2 times and received good comments from all Chinese opera lovers. Helen is a new artist and NYJPW encourages her to reach her upper level goal.

Penny and Jennifer Wang, mother and daughter performed in The Tragic Cave, December 5, 1996, in Chinatown, New York. Penny formed NYJPW and has volunteered her effort to promote Chinese and American Arts and Culture activities. Jennifer is a future star and she is helping NYJPW to develop home pages to serve for the public.
