NYJPW has been invited to celebrate the Chinese New Year and fundraising event with students and their families of The Chinese Language School of Connecticut on February 9, 2003. The newly established Chinese Language School of Connecticut has put up a big effort with teachers, parents and children's help to make a very successful Chinese New Year festival celebration and fund-raising. The tickets have sold out more than 250 guests from Fairfield County and New York. NYJPW artists Li Dan Hong, Xu Yu Cheng and Wang Guan Jun have brought the traditional cultural performance sword dance, silk ribbon dance and Chinese opera to the audience. Their performance have been fully appreciated and understood by the audience, especially the young children laught hysterically when they saw the comedic Chinese opera called "The Crossing".

The following sessions of the traditional Chinese Arts & Cultural Program have been presented by NYJPW artists to welcome the New Year.
  • Session One & Three - Silk Ribbon Dance & Sword Dance Performing by Li Dan Hong:
  • The lead artist, Li Dan Hong, who danced to "A Love Before Time" from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon at the 2001 OSCAR Awards, has performed silk ribbon dance and sword dance. Audience are fully appreciated the rythem of the music which is played by Chinese classical instrument by Jing Hu. Along with the music, Li Dan Hong has used a long colorful silk ribbon and danced using her imagination of the ancient Cave of Duan Huang. She has also performed the sword dance along with the music of famous Chinese movie "Crouching Tiger & Hidden Dragon".
  • Session Two - The Crossing Performing by Xu Yu Cheng and Wang Guan Jun:
  • NYJPW Chinese Opera Artists, Xu Yucheng and Wang Guanjun have performed Chinese Opera "The Crossing". This is one of the most famous Chinese Opera comedy comprising of many acrobat actions. Since the movement expression of the show is explained with body actions, it is easy to be understood by all aged. "The Crossing" show is one of the most popular performance which is well receiving by all audience, especially children. Xu Yucheng and Wang Guanjun have performed this story over hundred times in China and Asia. They have present another successful performance to the Chinese Language School of Connecticut.

    Story Synopsis for The Crossing:

    Jiao Tsan, a loyal and righteous official, was incriminated by his enemy and was banished to Sharmon Island. On the way, he had to stay at the Crossing Inn for the night. Ren Tang Hui, another guest for the evening, was sent by general Yang to secretly protect Jiao. Owner of the Inn, Liu Li Hua, mistook Ren as a hired assassin targeting Jiao. Liu sneaked into Ren's room to investigate. The two thus engaged in a deadly fight in pitch darkness almost costing their own lives. The misunderstanding finally came to a peaceful resolution.

    Xu Yu Cheng will perform Liu Li Hua and Wang Guan Jun will perform Ren Tang Hui.

  • Session Four - Audience Participation:
  • Upon the completion of the performance, NYJPW President, Cheng-Hua Wang and the artists have lead the audience to play with wooden knife, sword and silk ribbon that have been used in the performance. The long self-made red ribbons by Cheng-Hua Wang have been played by 4 selected students and quickly learned performance of Rainbow, Waterfalls and Sea Dragon. The wooden knife and sword have been played by another 4 students with good experience after they have taught by Wang Guan Jun and Xu Yu Cheng.
  • Session Five - Meet the Artists:
  • "Meet the Artists" session is opened for the audience for questions and answers related to the performance.
