NYJPW Chinese Opera Performance
In Celebration of 4699th Lunar New Year
Federal Building, 290 Broadway, New York, January 24, 2001

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has hosted a Peking Opera performance at the Federal Building at 290 Broadway between Duane and Reade Streets in celebration of Lunar New Year. Federal employees and 20 to 25 children from the Fedkids day-care program have attended the event.

NYJPW is greatly honored to present the Peking Opera with three separate performances: The Monkey King, Chien Yuan Mountain and Si Lang Visists His Mother. Five performers Li Ji Ling, Yu Rong, Zhang Li Wei, Yang Gui Ying and Cheng-Hua Wang are in full costume and make-up and song and performed acrobatics and martial arts. A Chinese ribbon dance demonstration by Paulette Reilly, employee of the IRS has followed the opera performances.

In the auditorirm, paper dragons have been hanging on both side of the entrance. Furtune cookies and Chinese astrology for the zodiac repeating cycle of 12 animals had been distributed. The illustration of the customs and face make-up, detail story and subtitle for dialogue and aria in the program, and Fedkids' participation to utilize the props have helped the audience to better understand the beauty of this traditional arts. With deeply enjoyment and appreciation, the performers and audience, including the Fedkids, everyone has a wonderful time. It is the first time to celebrate the Lunar New Year in Federal building at New York. NYJPW has successfully introduced this Chinese tranditional arts. NYJPW thanks the program organizer Richard Ho, who is Manager of the Asian and Pacific American Employment Program, to provide this opportunity to present Chinese Opera to EPA/IRS employees. NYJPW sincerely hope many more events can be brought in with Chinese Opera, the traditional form of arts, to entertain the U.S. society.
